OVERVIEW OF THE LONDON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (LCCI)

The London Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the capital’s largest and most representative business organisation, comprising of some 3,000 members which together employ 500,000 people. Members range in size from multi-national companies such as BT and Thames Water to SMEs and sole traders.

A company limited by guarantee, LCCI is independent of government, and since 1881 has been offering a range of business services and lobbying decision makers on behalf of the London business community.

Providing business advice and information, over 150 business events each year and international trade services – including online export documentation – from a City based office and several branches requires robust systems to meet client needs and generate income, thus an efficient and secure IT environment is paramount.

The Brief

Prior to employing 81G, the London Chamber employed their own IT technician and when he left, they decided to outsource the role to a company able to provide onsite support and advice. The successful arrangement led, in time, to the entire IT team being outsourced to 81G.

OBJECTIVES OF THE BRIEF

Several of the software applications used by LCCI are bespoke and have been specifically developed for the organisation’s own unique needs. The onsite team would be required to manage key suppliers of hardware and software and to maintain the security and integrity of the IT infrastructure. They would also be required to recommend and implement appropriate upgrades and solutions, to be fully conversant with existing systems and to develop new systems.

As LCCI’s offices are available for use by members and third party hirers of meeting and conference facilities, day to day user support was required not only for staff but also for visitors.

A team built and trained by 81G, who would also fit in fully with the culture and values of LCCI, was a prerequisite.

How the brief was executed

81G provide LCCI with an onsite IT team comprising an IT manager, a support engineer and an application developer. Based full time at their head office in the City of London, the team are essentially seen as LCCI employees, participating in all aspects of the organisation’s yearly life, whilst ultimately remaining under the auspices of 81G.

Using 81G provides LCCI with professional IT services and support and negates the need for LCCI to involve themselves in employing their own IT staff (and the related HR issues that can bring).
